Finding Files the FTP Way

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the simplest way to transfer files through the internet to your computer. We may not realize this, but everyone is likely to have used FTP in their search.  FTP can sometimes be downloaded for free and would not need for any user name or password to gain access, so most likely, people would have been downloading and using FTP file search without even knowing it.  FTP is usually used for downloading files, getting your hands on the latest MP3 files, bidding in online auctions and downloading games.  The best thing about this search engine is that you can share files to others or you can just download it for your own use.

Usually when downloading from the internet, you are importing a file from another computer.  The computer’s owner may not be displayed in the transfer, but you can see he internet address or the URL. HTTP and FTP address looks closely alike. A FTP address would look like this, ftp://ftp.bestftpsite.com.  A computer that has a FTP address is usually dedicated to receive FTP connection.  It is just like computers that received web pages called website or web server, in FTP, it is called FTP site or FTP server.

FTP sites are like filing cabinets, but much larger; like the traditional cabinet, a person managing the files can label and tag the files whichever way they want and choose the files they want to keep in a locked drawer or choose to share to the public.  Instead of a key, user id is use to gain access to the files.  When the FTP site is open to the public, they allow for anonymous log-ins, meaning that anybody can access the file without asking for a password or your name.  This is usually the most used in downloading stuff in the internet.  If the creator wants his site to be private, you are prompted to key in your user id and e-mail address that is unique and yours only.

FTP connection can be made in web browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, but the problem with this is it is more difficult to download the file and your computer would not be protected from the damage the downloads can do to your computer.  But is you use FTP connection with a software program like the FTP Client, which is dedicated for FTP files, it is easier and downloads are faster.  Plus you have added security for those large file downloads and you can resume downloading your file if ever your connection was interrupted.

FTP is really a convenient and an easier way to download files. In FTP Client, have two window panels.  The window on the left is the files you have in your computer and the right side shows the files of the other computer.  Just drag and drop the files for easy transfers.  Transferring files cannot get easier and faster than that.  And whenever your download is interrupted, you can always resume.
